Integrated Farming Systems and Agro-Tourism Development in India: An Economic Analysis of Rural Income Diversification and Sustainable Livelihoods

India’s rural economy is undergoing a structural transition from production-centred monoculture toward diversified and multi-functional livelihood systems. In this context, the present paper examines the economic significance of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) and agro-tourism as complementary strategies for rural income diversification and sustainable livelihood development. The study is grounded in the contemporary Indian context, where agriculture and allied activities contribute about 18% of total Gross Value Added, yet the sector still accounts for 43.0% of total employment in 2025, indicating continued dependence on a sector marked by fragmented holdings, seasonal vulnerability, and unstable income streams (Government of India, 2026a, 2026b). Simultaneously, the expansion of domestic tourism, with 2,509.13 million domestic tourist visits in 2023, has created growing scope for farm-based experiential enterprises and rural service-sector opportunities (Government of India, 2025).
The paper adopts a descriptive and analytical approach based on secondary data drawn from government reports, policy documents, and recent scholarly literature. The analysis shows that IFS strengthens livelihood sustainability through enterprise diversification, resource recycling, risk reduction, and improved labour utilization, while agro-tourism extends the farm economy into hospitality, local food systems, direct marketing, and visitor-based services. Their integration transforms the farm from a purely productive unit into a multi-functional rural enterprise system capable of generating year-round and multi-source income.
The study concludes that the IFS-agro-tourism linkage offers a viable pathway for strengthening rural resilience, women’s and youth participation, local entrepreneurship, and sustainable rural development in India. However, its long-term success depends on policy convergence, institutional coordination, credit support, infrastructure improvement, and targeted skill development.
